Nice cold day for fishing. Great way to start the New Year!
Big winter storm pushing our way today, but I still managed to get out and get a couple hours fishing in this afternoon on the Beaver Tailwaters. The fish were pretty active on the surface, but I haven’t figured out how to get the fish to respond when their acting like that. I decided to stick with my zebra midges. They seemed to like the P&P Midge the best, but also got some action on the Rootbeer Midge and the Purple Midge. I only managed to land a few before I was just too cold and wet.
Had lots of issues with the line today. Had several flies come off or fall apart, couple good tangles and the tippet snapped numerous times. It’s funny how you will have issues at the oddest times. It was pretty cold with temps right at freezing, pretty steady light drizzle and a slight breeze. My hands didn’t want to mess with retying so often today with those conditions. I really haven’t had any issues to speak of in my outings the last couple months, so that’s why I found it kind of humorous that I had so many issues today.
Two other brave fly fishers were out today. Both reported it was pretty tough going this afternoon. One guy said he could only get the fish to respond to a yellow micro jig. It had a yellow chenille body, white jig head, and white marabou tail in size 1/125. Never seen anything like it before. Almost more of a crappie rig than for trout, but if you find what works for you, go with it.
Hope you have a great year of fishing!
Happy Fishing and Stay Trout Tough!
