Beaver Tailwaters Jan 17th, love the Pheasant Tail Nymph!

Great morning fishing the Arkansas Beaver Tailwaters!  Fishing was fair on Black or Brown Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Egg Patterns and Red San Juan Worms.

The wind sure made it feel colder than it actually was with a pretty constant wind from 10 to 15 mphs.  I was fooled into thinking it was going to be warmer by having such great days on Thursday and Friday, but that was a mistake to not pack along warmer clothes.

Went out with a couple fishing buddies with one being his first fly fishing outing.  It was great to see him catch and hold his first trout caught on a fly rod.  He caught his on a Rootbeer Midge.

I’ve been working on tying Pheasant Tail Nymphs the last couple weeks.  These were my first ones I’ve tried and they produced pretty well.  I had a difficult time getting a solid hook set for some reason.  I missed at least 5 fish until I finally got a solid set and brought one in.  I’m looking forward to tying and fishing these more.  I’ve read numerous reports that they are a staple and no fly box should be without them.  I’m now a believer in that philosophy in just one outing.

Happy Fishing and Stay Trout Tough!
